What Are 3D Gel Plates? A Simple UK Guide
Short answer: what are 3D gel plates? They’re road-legal number plates where each printed black character is covered in a clear gel resin dome. The gel cures hard and rounded, so the letters look raised and glossy. They’re legal in the UK when made to BS AU 145e, and they’re the simplest way to make a plain plate look like an upgrade.

They’re one of the most popular styles we make in Hounslow, especially for people replacing tired standard plates who want something a bit smarter without going bold.

How 3D gel plates are made
- The registration is printed in solid black onto a reflective acrylic plate, white for the front and yellow for the back.
- A clear polyurethane gel is laid over each character by hand or machine, a precise amount per letter.
- The gel levels itself into a rounded dome and cures hard, magnifying the black underneath so it looks raised.
- The supplier’s name and postcode and the BS AU 145e mark go along the bottom, and the plate is checked before it leaves.
Because the black is printed underneath, the character size, font and spacing are exactly the same as a standard plate. The gel just sits on top.
What are 3D gel plates like to live with? Pros and cons
Pros
- A glossy, raised look that stands out from flat printed plates.
- The gel has a little flex, so it copes with light knocks.
- Same price as 3mm 4D, and not much more than standard plates.
- Fits like any other plate, with pads or screws.
Cons
- The edges are rounded, so it isn’t as sharp-looking as laser-cut 4D.
- The gloss can pick up fine scratches if it’s scrubbed with anything rough or put through a brush car wash often.

Shop 3D gel platesAsk us on WhatsAppAre 3D gel plates legal?
Yes. GOV.UK confirms plates “can also have 3D (raised) characters”, as long as the plate meets the British Standard. For 3D gel that means:
- Characters are a single shade of solid black, and the gel is clear, not tinted.
- The Charles Wright font, at the standard 79mm height and 50mm width.
- 11mm between characters and 33mm between the two groups.
- The supplier’s name, postcode and “BS AU 145e” on the plate.
A 3D gel plate that’s been squeezed onto a short plate or made with a “sporty” font isn’t legal, however good it looks. If you’re buying from a registered supplier, you’ll be asked for your ID and V5C. Here’s the full list of documents needed for number plates.
Which cars suit 3D gel plates?
From what we see at the counter, 3D gel looks best on cars with smooth, rounded lines and gloss black trim: hatchbacks, family SUVs and saloons. It adds a bit of polish without shouting. If your car is sharp and angular, or you want the letters to throw a real shadow, compare 3D with 4D plates first.
How much do 3D gel plates cost?
Our 3D gel plates are £49.99 a pair, with free tracked delivery and same-day dispatch when you order before 2pm. If you want the glossy finish on laser-cut letters, 4D gel starts at £64.99.
Fitting and care
3D gel plates fit exactly like standard plates. Use strong adhesive pads on a clean, dry bumper, or screws with caps if your car has holes. Our guide to installing number plates walks you through it.
To keep the gloss, wash with car shampoo and a soft microfibre cloth, keep pressure washers at least 30cm away, and avoid solvent cleaners.

What are 3D gel plates?
Number plates with printed black characters covered by a clear, rounded gel resin dome, so the letters look raised and glossy.
Are 3D gel plates legal in the UK?
Yes, if they’re made to BS AU 145e with solid black characters, the legal font and spacing, and the supplier’s markings.
How long do 3D gel plates last?
Years, with normal care. Keep pressure washers at a distance and don’t scrub them with anything abrasive.
Are 3D gel plates the same as 4D?
No. 3D gel has printed letters under a gel dome. 4D has letters laser-cut from solid acrylic with sharp edges.
Can 3D gel plates be fitted with sticky pads?
Yes. They fit the same as standard plates, with adhesive pads or screws.
