4D Laser Cut vs 3D Gel Number Plates: Which Lasts Longer?
Short answer: when you compare 4D laser cut vs 3D gel plates over the long run, both last for years if they’re made properly. 4D laser cut letters are solid acrylic, so they keep their sharp shape and don’t yellow, but a hard, sharp knock can chip an edge. 3D gel is slightly flexible, so it shrugs off small knocks better, but the gel can pick up fine scratches if it’s scrubbed with anything rough. Pick on looks first, then on where the car lives.

4D laser cut vs 3D gel: how each one is made
4D laser cut: each letter is cut by laser from a sheet of black acrylic, 3mm or 6mm thick, then bonded to a reflective plate. You’re looking at solid acrylic, the same all the way through.
3D gel: the letters are printed onto the plate, then a clear polyurethane resin is laid over each one. It cures into a raised, rounded dome that magnifies the black underneath.
That difference in construction is what decides how each one ages.
Durability: which lasts longer?
In normal use, neither wears out quickly. The difference is in the type of damage each is likely to pick up.
- 4D laser cut is rigid. It holds a perfect edge for years and won’t go cloudy. A hard knock with something sharp, like a parking bollard or a careless reversing tow bar, can chip a corner of a letter.
- 3D gel has a little give. A light nudge in a car park usually leaves nothing behind. The glossy dome can pick up fine swirl marks if you use a stiff brush or a gritty sponge on it.
If the car is parked on a tight street and gets bumped, 3D gel is the more forgiving choice. If it lives on a driveway and you want the crispest look for longest, go 4D.
Weather, sun and car washes
We use UV-stable gel and acrylic, so neither should yellow in the sun. Both are fine in rain and frost. The thing that does damage is the car wash:
- Pressure washers: fine for both, but keep the nozzle 30cm or more away. Blasting the edge of a letter up close can lift it over time.
- Brush car washes: harder on 3D gel, because the bristles can dull the gloss.
- Harsh chemicals: avoid solvent cleaners and tar removers on both.

Because both last for years, the running cost is close to nothing. The expensive mistake is buying cheap non-compliant plates and replacing them after an MOT fail, which we see every week.
Looking after 4D and 3D gel plates
- Rinse off grit first, so you’re not rubbing it into the surface.
- Wash with warm water, car shampoo and a soft microfibre cloth.
- Use a soft brush, like a clean toothbrush, around 4D letters to get dirt out of the edges.
- Dry with a clean microfibre, rather than letting water spots dry on.

Which lasts longer, 4D laser cut or 3D gel?
