What Are Hex Number Plates?

Hex number plates — also known as Lambo style plates — feature a distinctive hexagonal cut at both ends of the plate rather than the standard square corners. The angled profile is inspired by the wide, low plates fitted to exotic vehicles like Lamborghinis, and gives any car a more aggressive, purposeful stance at the front and rear.

Unlike standard square-cornered plates, the hexagonal shape creates a visual effect that makes the plate appear wider and lower — which is why they're popular with modified cars, performance vehicles, and drivers who want their plate to be part of how the car is presented rather than just a legal necessity.

Every PlateBoss hex plate is custom cut to fit your registration, manufactured in-house at our Hounslow workshop, and fully compliant with DVLA regulations and BS AU 145e. The shape is distinctive — the legality is absolute.

Who Chooses Hex Plates?

  • Hex plates are the most visually distinctive style in our range — they make an immediate statement and they're not for everyone, which is precisely why the drivers who choose them love them.

They're particularly popular with modified cars, lowered vehicles, sports cars, and prestige vehicles where the plate is part of the overall aesthetic. BMW M cars, Audis, Porsches, and of course anything with an exotic flavour tend to suit the hex profile particularly well. They also work well on 4x4s and SUVs where the wider stance of the vehicle calls for something bolder than a standard plate.

If you want your plate to be noticed, hex is the right choice. If you want something more understated, our bevelled or 4D plates might suit you better.

Built for Style and Durability

All our number plates are made using only the highest quality components. Thats why we can offer a 3 year warranty on all our number plates. Our number plates are resistant to weathering, UV exposure, and road vibration — they won't peel, fade, or delaminate under normal conditions. That's why we back every plate with a three-year warranty. If anything fails, we replace it. No argument.

Legal, Compliant & Built to Last

Every plate leaves our Hounslow workshop compliant with DVLA regulations and BS AU 145e — the British Standard for number plate materials introduced in September 2021. We use Charles Wright font at the correct character size and spacing, reflective white front and yellow rear backgrounds, and include full supplier details as required by law. If it wouldn't pass an MOT check, we won't make it.

Are Hex Number Plates Legal in the UK?

Yes, hex number plates are legal in the UK provided they meet all current DVLA display requirements. The hexagonal cut affects only the shape of the plate corners — it does not affect the character size, spacing, font, or reflective background requirements, all of which must still meet the legal standard.

The plate must display the correct character size and spacing using Charles Wright font, maintain the required 11mm margin around the registration, use the correct reflective backgrounds — white at the front and yellow at the rear — and carry BS AU 145e markings and supplier details for plates made after September 2021.

At PlateBoss, every hex plate is manufactured to meet these requirements. The distinctive hexagonal profile is achieved by precision cutting the corners at the correct angle — nothing about the legal display requirements is compromised. Our hex plates will pass an MOT.

What Are Hex Number Plates?

Hex number plates are standard road legal number plates with the corners cut at an angle to create a hexagonal profile. The name comes from the hexagonal shape — and the style is commonly called Lambo plates because of their association with the wide, low number plates fitted to Lamborghini vehicles.

The cut is applied to both ends of the plate, giving it a trapezoidal or hexagonal appearance depending on the angle used. The registration itself, the character size and spacing, the font, and the reflective background are all identical to standard plates — only the outer shape of the plate differs.

They are available as standard printed plates or combined with any of our premium character finishes — 3D gel, 4D, 4D gel, or bevelled.

Why Choose Hex Plates?

A standard number plate does the job, but it doesn't suit the finish of a well-kept car. 4D plates give your vehicle a sharper, more premium look while keeping the registration clear and easy to read.

The appeal is in the detail. The acrylic letters create a crisp raised profile, giving the plate a more modern finish than flat printed characters. It's a simple upgrade, but it makes the front and rear of the car look noticeably cleaner and more considered.

Hex Plates vs Standard Plates

The only difference between hex and standard plates is the shape of the corners. Both display the same registration in the same font with the same legal requirements. The hex cut is a purely aesthetic choice — it does not affect legality, MOT compliance, or readability. If you want the most distinctive plate shape available while staying fully road legal, hex is it.

Hex Plates Look Even Better With a Premium Finish

A hex plate on its own is a worthwhile upgrade - but paired with raised characters, it becomes one of the most striking combinations in our range.

Hex + Standard Printed

Clean hexagonal shape with flat printed lettering. Bold profile, understated finish. A good starting point.

Hex + 3D Gel

Raised domed gel characters inside the hex profile. A strong combination that adds depth without going too far.

Hex + 4D 3mm

Sharp laser-cut acrylic characters in a hex frame. Clean, modern, and aggressive. One of our most requested combinations.

Hex + 4D 6mm

The deepest acrylic character available in the most distinctive plate shape we make. Maximum visual impact while staying fully road legal.

Hex + Bevelled

Angled characters inside an angled plate. A premium retro-inspired combination that works particularly well on classic and prestige vehicles.

Select your preferred character style when ordering and we'll build the complete set to match.

FAQs

Are hex number plates legal in the UK?

Yes — hex number plates are fully road legal provided all DVLA display requirements are met. The hexagonal corner cut is a purely aesthetic modification to the plate shape and does not affect character size, spacing, font, reflectivity, or material requirements. PlateBoss is a DVLA-registered supplier and every hex plate we produce complies with BS AU 145e and will pass an MOT.

What is the difference between hex plates and Lambo plates?

There is no difference! They're the same thing — "Lambo plates" is the common name for hex number plates, inspired by the distinctive hexagonal plate shape associated with Lamborghini vehicles. Both names refer to a standard road legal plate with angled corner cuts. At PlateBoss we use both terms interchangeably.

Can I combine hex plates with a premium finish like 3D gel or 4D?

Yes — and it's our most popular request for hex plates. The hexagonal shape is available with any character style we offer, including 3D gel, 4D 3mm, 4D 6mm, and bevelled. The most popular combination is hex shape with 4D 3mm characters.

What vehicles suit hex plates best?

Hex plates look best on modified cars, performance vehicles, lowered cars, sports cars, and prestige vehicles where the driver has put thought into the overall aesthetic. They're particularly popular on BMWs, Audis, Porsches, and exotic vehicles. That said, they work on any vehicle — the choice comes down to the look you want.

Are hex plates available in short size?

Yes — the hex cut can be combined with a short plate size for a particularly compact and aggressive combination. This is popular with private registration owners who want the maximum visual impact from their plate. Select both options when ordering.

What documents do I need to order?

By law, all number plate suppliers must verify your identity and entitlement to the registration before supplying plates. You'll need proof of identity and proof of entitlement — typically your V5C logbook, a new keeper supplement, or a certificate of entitlement for a personalised registration. Full details are on our valid documents page. You can upload during checkout, or send by email, WhatsApp, or post.

How long does delivery take?

Standard delivery is free tracked Royal Mail 48-hour. Upgrade to tracked 24-hour for £5 at checkout. Orders placed before 2pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day. If you're local to Hounslow, same-day collection is available.
