Trailer & Caravan Number Plates – Commercial and Non-Commercial
Two Types of Trailer Plate, One Simple Choice
Not sure which trailer plate you need? It depends on how you’re towing. Most UK drivers towing a caravan or trailer at home simply need a plate that repeats their car’s own registration. If you’re towing a trailer over 750kg abroad in Europe, DVLA requires a separate, uniquely registered Trailer Registration Number (TRN) plate instead.
Non-Commercial Trailer Plates (Same Reg as Your Car)
For everyday UK towing, a trailer or caravan doesn’t get its own registration – it must display the exact same number as your towing vehicle. Our non-commercial trailer number plate is made to full BS AU 145e specification and is the plate almost every UK driver needs.
Commercial Trailer Plates (DVLA TRN)
If your trailer weighs over 750kg and you’re towing it to most of Europe, DVLA requires it to display its own unique Trailer Registration Number. Our Commercial Trailer Number Plate (DVLA TRN) is produced to the exact DVLA specification, matching the format and dimensions used for motorcycle plates.
Made In-House to DVLA Standards
All our trailer plates are manufactured in-house using high-quality, durable materials, ensuring every plate meets DVLA and BS AU 145e standards. Whether you’re towing a caravan, box trailer, car transporter or horsebox, our plates are built to stay legible, durable and fully legal.

Trailer Number Plates: Your Questions Answered
How much is a trailer number plate?
Both of our trailer plates are £19.99: the same-reg trailer plate for everyday UK towing and the commercial TRN plate for towing over 750kg in Europe. Free Royal Mail Tracked 48 delivery, or collect free from our Hounslow workshop.
Where does the trailer plate go?
When you tow, the trailer hides your car’s rear plate, so the law requires the rear plate to be shown on the back of the trailer instead. For a domestic trailer or caravan that plate shows your towing vehicle’s registration, so if you tow with a different car, you need a plate for that car’s registration.
Which trailers need a TRN plate?
Only trailers over 750kg towed to most of Europe (not Ireland, Cyprus, Malta or Spain) need to be registered with the DVLA. The DVLA issues a Trailer Registration Number of 1 letter and 7 numbers, shown over 2 lines on a white motorcycle-size plate with 64mm characters. Trailers of 750kg or less, and A-frame trailers, cannot get a TRN.
What documents do I need?
For a same-reg trailer plate, the same documents as any number plate: photo ID and proof you are entitled to the registration, such as your V5C. For a TRN plate, your trailer registration certificate or trailer number plate authorisation certificate (valid for 5 days), plus ID showing your name and address. See our valid documents page.
Can I collect a trailer plate today?
Yes. Bring your documents to our Hounslow workshop and we can make your trailer plate while you wait. Riding a motorbike too? See our motorbike number plates.
