Can You Make Your Own Number Plate? What the Law Says (UK)

Short answer: can you make your own number plate? Not one you can legally use on the road. In the UK, road-legal plates can only be made by a DVLA-registered number plate supplier, who has to check your ID and your right to the registration first. You can’t invent your own registration either; you buy a private number from the DVLA or a dealer. What you can do is choose the style of your plate within the rules and have a registered supplier make it, or order a novelty sign for display off the road.

Can you make your own number plate? What the law says

GOV.UK is clear: you can only get a number plate made up by a registered number plate supplier. Those suppliers are on the DVLA’s register, and in England and Wales it’s an offence to run a business supplying number plates without being registered.

Even if you only wanted a plate for your own car, there’s no practical way to make a road-legal one at home:

  • It has to meet BS AU 145e. Plates fitted since 1 September 2021 must be made to this British Standard, using tested reflective materials that hold up to weather, light and knocks.
  • It has to show the supplier’s details. A legal plate carries the name and postcode of the registered supplier that made it, plus the BS AU 145e mark. A home-made plate can’t legitimately show either.
  • The supplier has to see your documents. That check is the whole point of the register: it stops plates being made for cars that aren’t yours, which is how cloned plates happen.

Get it wrong and you’re looking at the same penalties as any incorrectly displayed plate: a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT fail.

What most people actually mean

In all our years making plates, we’ve never had anyone bring in a home-made one. When people ask us about “making their own number plate”, they almost always mean something simpler: they own a registration and want it turned into a physical plate.

That’s exactly what a registered supplier is for. You bring one document that proves who you are, like your driving licence, and one that proves you’re entitled to the registration, such as your V5C logbook, a V750 certificate of entitlement for a private number, or a V948. Our guide to the documents needed for number plates has the full list.

Can you create your own registration?

No. Every registration is issued by the DVLA, so you can’t make one up and put it on a plate. If you want a particular registration, you can buy a private (personalised) number from the DVLA or from a private dealer. You’ll get a V750 certificate of entitlement, and once the number is assigned to your vehicle, a registered supplier can make the plates.

One thing to check before you buy: the registration has to be displayed in its proper format, with the gap in the right place. Plenty of private numbers only spell a name if you move the spacing, which isn’t allowed. Our number plate spacing guide explains why.

How a legal plate is made at our workshop

Here’s what actually happens when you order a plate from us:

  1. Document check. We check your ID and your entitlement to the registration before anything is made.
  2. Preparing the materials. We get the plate materials ready to the BS AU 145e standard.
  3. Printing. We print the reflective layer with the registration, our maker details (our name and postcode) and the BS AU 145e mark.
  4. Assembly. We assemble the plate components into the finished plate.
  5. Raised characters where needed. For 3D gel and 4D plates, we add the raised characters on top.

What you can choose

You can’t design your plate from scratch, but there’s more choice than people expect, all within the rules:

  • The style. Standard printed, 3D gel or 4D raised characters.
  • The shape and size. Options like short plates, as long as the characters stay the legal size with proper margins.
  • A flag and identifier. One of the Union flag, Cross of St George, Saltire or Red Dragon of Wales, with an identifier such as UK, GB, ENG, SCO or CYM, on the left-hand side.
  • A green flash if your vehicle is zero emission.

What you can’t change is the font, the character sizes, the spacing or the colours: black characters on white at the front and yellow at the back. Anything else, such as extra text, logos or novelty fonts, turns it into a show plate.

Want a custom plate that isn’t for the road?

If you’re after something truly personal, like a name, a slogan or a plate for the garage wall, we make signs too. They’re for display only, not for use on the road. Our wedding car plates are a popular example. Just don’t fit one to a car you’re driving: that’s a show plate, and the same £1,000 fine applies.

Can you make your own number plate: FAQs

Can I print my own number plate at home?

Not a road-legal one. Plates must be made by a DVLA-registered supplier to BS AU 145e, showing the supplier’s name and postcode. A home-printed plate can’t meet those rules, so using it on the road risks a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT fail.

Is it illegal to make number plates?

In England and Wales it’s an offence to run a business supplying number plates without being registered with the DVLA. Registered suppliers must also check your ID and your right to the registration before making a plate.

Can I make up my own registration number?

No. Registrations are issued by the DVLA. You can buy a private number from the DVLA or a dealer, which gives you a V750 certificate of entitlement, and then have plates made by a registered supplier.

What do I need to get a number plate made?

One document proving who you are, like a driving licence, and one proving you’re entitled to the registration, such as a V5C, V750 or V948.

Can I design my own number plate?

Within limits. You can choose the style (printed, 3D gel or 4D), a legal size such as a short plate, a permitted flag and identifier, and a green flash if your vehicle is zero emission. The font, character sizes, spacing and colours are fixed.

Can you make a custom number plate sign for display?

Yes. We make signs for display, such as personalised wedding car plates. They’re not road legal and mustn’t be fitted to a car that’s being driven.
