Green Flash Number Plates: Who Can Have Them?
Green flash number plates, the short answer: only zero-emission vehicles can legally have one. Since 8 December 2020, cars, vans, motorbikes and other vehicles that produce no CO2 at the tailpipe have been allowed to show a green flash on the left-hand side of their number plates. That means fully electric (and hydrogen) vehicles qualify. Hybrids, including plug-in hybrids, don’t, because they still have an exhaust. The green flash is optional, even on an electric car.
Written by the PlateBoss team, led by owner HD. We’ve been making plates since 2019 and are a DVLA-registered number plate supplier with a workshop in Hounslow, west London. Checked against DVLA leaflet INF104, GOV.UK guidance and the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) (Amendment) Regulations 2020, October 2026. How we write our guides.

Who can have a green flash
The rule is about the tailpipe. The government’s announcement said green plates can go on any vehicle, including cars, vans, buses, HGVs, taxis and motorcycles, as long as it emits no CO2 at the tailpipe. The DVLA’s leaflet INF104 calls them eligible zero emission vehicles (ZEVs).
| Vehicle | Green flash allowed? |
|---|---|
| Fully electric (battery EV) | Yes |
| Hydrogen fuel cell | Yes |
| Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) | No |
| Self-charging / mild hybrid | No |
| Petrol or diesel | No |
It works for existing cars too. If you’ve had an electric car since before December 2020, you can swap to green flash plates now.

“Can I have one on my hybrid?”
Hybrid owners ask us about the green flash all the time, and it’s easy to see why: the car is partly electric, it might charge from a plug, and the green flash looks good.
But the rules don’t have a middle ground. A hybrid still burns fuel and has a tailpipe, so it isn’t a zero-emission vehicle, and a green flash on it means the plate doesn’t meet the rules. That puts it in the same position as any other incorrectly displayed plate, which can mean a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT fail.
Demand for green flash plates has grown since we launched our EV range in September 2026.
Driving a fully electric car? Our EV plates come with the green flash in printed, 3D gel, 4D, 4D gel and retro styles.

- Position: a vertical green band on the left-hand side of the plate, front and rear.
- Optional: no electric car has to show one.
- Everything else stays the same: the plate still needs the standard font, spacing, reflective background, supplier’s name and BS AU 145e mark.
The flash doesn’t change any other rule, so our guides to number plate spacing and number plate sizes still apply.
Green flash plates in different styles
You’re not stuck with plain printed plates. The green flash can go on any legal style:
- EV printed, from £34.99
- EV 3D gel and EV 4D, from £54.99
- EV 4D gel, from £69.99
- EV retro (4D retro style), from £74.99

Who can have a green flash on their number plate?
Only zero-emission vehicles, meaning vehicles that emit no CO2 at the tailpipe, such as fully electric and hydrogen cars, vans and motorbikes.
Can hybrids have green number plates?
No. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids still have a tailpipe and burn fuel, so they don’t qualify for the green flash.
Is the green flash compulsory on electric cars?
No. It’s optional. An electric car can use standard plates with no flash.
Where does the green flash go?
On the left-hand side of the plate, front and rear.
Can I get green flash plates for an older electric car?
Yes. The green flash can be added to any eligible zero-emission vehicle, however old it is.
Can I have 4D or gel plates with a green flash?
Yes. We make EV plates in printed, 3D gel, 4D, 4D gel and retro styles, all with the green flash.
What happens if I put a green flash on a car that isn’t electric?
The plate wouldn’t meet the rules, and incorrectly displayed plates can lead to a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT fail.
