Number Plate Sizes UK: Standard, Short, 4×4 and More
Number plate sizes UK, the short answer: the standard UK number plate size is 520mm × 111mm, but there’s no single legal plate size. UK law fixes the size of the characters, the spacing and the margins, not the plate itself. So a plate can be shorter, taller or a different shape, as long as the full registration fits with the correct character sizes and at least 11mm of margin all round. If it doesn’t fit, the plate isn’t road legal.

What the law actually sets
There’s no measurement in the rules that says “a number plate must be 520mm wide”. What the DVLA’s leaflet INF104 does set, for vehicles registered from 1 September 2001, is this:
| Measurement | Size |
|---|---|
| Character height | 79mm |
| Character width (except the figure 1 or letter I) | 50mm |
| Space between characters in a group | 11mm |
| Space between the two groups | 33mm |
| Top, bottom and side margins (minimum) | 11mm |
| Vertical gap between lines (two-line plates) | 19mm |
The plate has to be big enough to hold all of that, which is why number plate sizes in the UK vary. Below are the number plate sizes UK drivers use most, and the smallest the law allows. That’s why the size you need depends on your registration, not just your car. Our number plate spacing guide explains each measurement in more detail.
Number plate sizes UK: the common ones
These are the number plate sizes UK drivers ask us for most often at the workshop:
| Plate | Size | Usually for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 520mm × 111mm | Most cars, front and rear |
| Oversized | 533mm × 152mm | Taller rear recesses |
| 4×4 (two-line) | 280mm × 200mm | Square rear recesses on 4x4s and some vans |
| Short | Shorter than standard, depending on the registration | Shorter registrations and smaller recesses |
| Hex / Lambo | Shaped edge, sized to the registration | Supercars and cars with shaped recesses |
| Motorbike | Two-line rear plate | Motorbikes (rear plate only) |
| Japanese and US import | Sized to the car’s recess | Imported cars with non-UK recesses |
A two-line plate needs at least 79 + 19 + 79mm for the characters plus 11mm margins top and bottom, which comes to 199mm. That’s why the 4×4 plate is 200mm tall. For bike sizes, see our motorbike number plate size guide.

How short can a number plate be?
It depends on how many characters the registration has. Using the legal measurements above, here’s roughly the shortest a one-line plate can be, with no side badge:
| Registration | Approximate minimum width |
|---|---|
| 7 characters (e.g. AB12 CDE) | 460mm |
| 6 characters (3 + 3) | 400mm |
| 5 characters (2 + 3) | 338mm |
| 4 characters (2 + 2) | 277mm |
These are our own calculations from the INF104 measurements. A registration with a 1 or an I can be a little shorter because those characters are narrower, and a side badge such as a UK identifier adds width. The minimum height for a one-line plate is 101mm (79mm characters plus two 11mm margins).
So a current-style 7-character registration can’t legally go on a plate much shorter than about 460mm. That’s where our short number plates come in for shorter registrations, and why we ask for the registration before confirming a size.
Not sure which size fits your car? Send us a photo of your plate recess and your registration, and we’ll tell you which size works and is still road legal.
See standard platesSend us a photo on WhatsApp“Can you make it smaller?”
It’s the most common question we get about number plate sizes. UK drivers usually ask it when they have a small recess, a private registration or a car they want to look tidier. Sometimes we can, if the registration still fits at full size with the right margins.
When the plate someone wants is too short for their registration to fit legally, we tell them straight: it won’t be road legal, and a plate like that would only be suitable for off-road use. We’d rather lose the sale than send someone away with a plate that gets them stopped or fails their MOT. The usual fix is a different shape that does fit, such as a hex plate or a two-line plate.
How to measure your plate recess
- Measure the flat area where the plate sits, width and height, in millimetres.
- Note any curves or lips at the edges, and any number plate lights or sensors near the plate.
- Write out your registration and count the characters in each group.
- Compare with the minimum sizes above. If the recess is smaller than the minimum, a different shape is the answer, not a smaller plate.
Our hex number plates and oversized plates cover most of the cars that a standard plate doesn’t fit.

What size is a UK number plate?
The standard UK number plate is 520mm × 111mm. There’s no single legal size, though: the law sets character sizes, spacing and margins, so other sizes are legal if the registration fits correctly.
Is there a legal size for number plates in the UK?
Not for the plate itself. INF104 sets 79mm tall, 50mm wide characters, 11mm gaps within groups, a 33mm gap between groups and at least 11mm margins. The plate must be large enough for all of it.
Are short number plates legal?
Yes, if the registration fits with the correct character sizes, spacing and margins. A 7-character registration needs a plate of roughly 460mm or more.
What size is a 4×4 number plate?
Our 4×4 two-line plate is 280mm × 200mm. A two-line plate needs at least 199mm of height to fit the characters, line gap and margins.
What size is an oversized number plate?
Our oversized plate is 533mm × 152mm, for cars with a taller rear recess.
Can I have a smaller number plate to fit my car?
Only if your registration still fits at the legal sizes. If it doesn’t, the plate wouldn’t be road legal and would only be suitable for off-road use. A hex or two-line plate is often the fix.
Do you make number plates for Japanese and US imports?
Yes. Import recesses vary, so send us the recess measurements and your registration and we’ll confirm a legal size.
