Below are answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often about ordering number plates from PlateBoss. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please contact us.

Why do I have to send you my documents to order number plates?

The DVLA strictly requires all original documents to be verified in person by the manufacturing company. This is a legal requirement for all number plate suppliers. To order number plates from PlateBoss, you must send us your original physical ID document and entitlement document before we can produce them. This is to stop criminals from cloning number plates for criminal purposes. After you have placed your order on our website, you will be emailed instructions on how to best send your documents to us.

If you do not provide these documents when purchasing your plates, they are not considered road legal. Any company providing number plates without seeing the original documents is operating illegally. For a full list of acceptable documents, please see our Valid Documents page.

Which ID documents do I have to provide?

Please see our Valid Documents page to check which ID documents are suitable.

Do you offer a warranty on your number plates?

All PlateBoss plates come with a 3-year warranty as standard. This covers tunnelling (where the reflective part of the number plate lets water behind it and separates from the acrylic), de-lamination of the letters, and fading. Drilling screws into a number plate compromises its integrity, reflective ability and longevity, so we only provide fixing pads for our plates. Drilling holes into your number plates will void the warranty.

Can I collect my order?

Yes. Simply place your order online and select “Collect from store” at checkout. Once we’ve received your order we’ll contact you to arrange a time to visit our workshop with your documents to collect your plates. Visit our Contact Us page for our address and opening times.

Do your plates fit curved bumpers?

Yes, all our plates fit curved bumpers. Our 3D/4D and 4D Gel characters are attached using extremely strong 3M adhesive. If your vehicle’s bumper has an extreme curve, it may be best to order printed or 3D Gel plates, as these characters are more flexible.

Are 3D/4D and 5D number plates road legal?

Yes. As long as all the other criteria set by the DVLA are met, they are completely road legal. The DVLA states that characters on a number plate can be 3D (“4D” is an industry-standard name for the same style of plate, and is still 3D).

Can I add extra text to my number plate, such as my name or company?

No, this is not road legal.

Do the names on the ID and entitlement document need to match exactly?

No. UK law permits the purchase of number plates as a gift. You can use your own ID, along with the entitlement certificate for a registration belonging to a family member or friend, to legally purchase number plates on their behalf.

How will my documents be returned to me?

We take the utmost care when handling and shipping your documents. Once we’ve verified your documents and produced your number plates, we’ll safely package everything together and return it using a fully tracked, signed-for service from Royal Mail.

What is your shipping policy?

All number plate orders include free Royal Mail Tracked 48 signed-for delivery as standard. Plates are dispatched within 24 hours of us receiving your identification and entitlement documentation.

Can I track my order once it has been dispatched?

Yes. All orders are sent via Royal Mail Tracked services. Once dispatched, you’ll be emailed a link with your tracking number. If you don’t receive this, please check your spam or junk folder first, then contact us if you still can’t find it.

When will my number plates be dispatched?

All plates are dispatched within 24 hours of us receiving your identification and entitlement documentation, with free Royal Mail Tracked 48 signed-for delivery included as standard.

What is the standard UK number plate size?

Standard UK number plates are 520mm in length and 111mm in height, the size you’ll see on most vehicles on the road today.

Can I expect my number plates to be flawless?

We aim to produce perfect plates every time, and every plate is quality-checked before dispatch. As these are handmade, custom products, a slight imperfection may very occasionally be present, though this won’t render your plates illegal or non-compliant. If we feel a plate won’t meet legal requirements before dispatch, we discard it and restart production. If you have any questions, email info@plateboss.co.uk or call 02037 332494.
