Commercial Trailer Number Plate (DVLA TRN) – For Trailers Over 750kg
If you’re towing a trailer over 750kg to most of Europe, DVLA requires it to display its own unique Trailer Registration Number (TRN) – separate from your car’s registration. A TRN plate is not the same as an everyday UK trailer plate (which simply repeats your car’s own number) – it shows the individual registration DVLA has issued to your trailer.

Do You Need a TRN Plate?
You’ll need a DVLA-issued Trailer Registration Number if:
✔ Your trailer (including a caravan) weighs over 750kg
✔ You’re planning to tow it to most European countries
👉 Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and Spain don’t require a TRN – a plate showing your tow vehicle’s own registration is enough for these destinations
Note: trailers under 750kg, and A-frame trailers, cannot be registered for a TRN under DVLA rules. If you only tow within the UK, or your trailer is under 750kg, you need our non-commercial trailer number plate instead, which simply repeats your car’s own registration.
What’s On a TRN Plate?
Once DVLA has registered your trailer, they’ll issue a unique registration made up of one letter followed by seven numbers, e.g. A123 4567. Your plate must display this exact registration, laid out over two lines, in the correct DVLA format.
