Number plates for Leeds that pass the roadside check
Number plates Leeds drivers can rely on at the MOT and at the roadside: legal font, legal spacing and the BS AU 145e mark, from a DVLA-registered supplier, posted free across West Yorkshire.
5.0 on Google · hundreds of reviewsLeeds was all set for a Clean Air Zone, then dropped it. In October 2020 the council and government agreed it was no longer needed, because more than 90% of buses had moved to cleaner Euro VI engines and nearly half of taxis were hybrid or electric.
No zone, then. But the plates on Leeds cars still get looked at, by West Yorkshire Police at the roadside and by testers at every MOT. That’s what this page is about: what gets a plate flagged, and how we make number plates Leeds motorists won’t get pulled over for.
Tickets for illegal plates, year by year
West Yorkshire Police released how many times it dealt with drivers for the offence of a registration mark that doesn’t conform to the rules. Tickets are fixed penalty notices. Defect notices (VDRS) give the driver a set time to fix the plate and prove it. The figures cover the whole force area, Leeds included, so they’re the best guide to how often number plates Leeds officers check get flagged.

Plates that fail the MOT, by the numbers
Across Great Britain in 2025, plates and plate lights added up to more than 1.3 million MOT failure items for cars and light vans. The most common plate fault was simple: characters that couldn’t be read properly. Faded number plates Leeds drivers have put up with for years are a classic example.

Six things we won’t put on your plates
These six faults are behind most tickets and fails. Avoid them and the number plates Leeds police and MOT testers look at on your car have nothing to flag.
Closing gaps to spell a word. The gaps are fixed by law.
Italic, script or squashed letters. Only the Charles Wright font is allowed.
Carbon, honeycomb or tints behind the letters.
Characters must be black and solid, front and rear.
Every legal plate carries the standard and the supplier’s details.
We don’t make them at all, so you can’t end up with one by mistake.

Leeds questions
What is a VDRS notice?
It’s a defect notice from the police. Instead of a fine, you get the fault fixed and have it checked within a set time. A new, legal set of plates sorts a plate defect.
My rear plate light is out. Will that fail the MOT?
Yes, plate lamp faults are a fail. That’s a bulb or wiring job rather than a plate one, so get it checked before the test.
Do you make motorbike plates for Yorkshire riders?
Yes, motorbike plates in printed, 3D gel, 4D and 4D gel for bikes registered from 1 September 2001. We don’t make the tiny plates, because they aren’t road legal.
Will 4D plates pass a Leeds MOT?
Yes, raised characters are allowed if they’re black, in the legal font and spacing, on a plate marked BS AU 145e. That’s how we make every 3D and 4D set, including the number plates Leeds customers order by post.
