Short 4D Number Plates (Compact Fit, Sharp Finish, Road Legal)
Our short 4D number plates are cut to a reduced width, built for vehicles that need a more compact plate without losing the sharp, raised finish of the standard 4D range. If your car has a smaller plate recess, or your registration only runs to four, five or six characters, a short plate avoids the gap and excess space that a full length plate leaves behind.
Every plate is manufactured in house using precision cut acrylic, and finished to the same DVLA standard as our full size 4D 3mm plates.
What Is a Short Number Plate?
A short number plate is a reduced width version of a standard plate, sized to suit the registration length and the plate recess of the vehicle. Rather than stretching a short registration across a full length plate, a short plate keeps the characters properly spaced and proportioned for a cleaner look.
Are Short Plates Road Legal?
Yes. Short plates are fully road legal as long as the character size, spacing, font and reflective material meet DVLA requirements, regardless of the overall plate width. Every short 4D 3mm plate we produce is made to BSAU 145e specification and checked before dispatch.
Which Vehicles Suit a Short Plate?
Short plates are popular with:
- Sports cars and coupes with a narrower plate recess
- Classic and older vehicles built before longer plates became standard
- Any registration of four, five or six characters that would otherwise leave a gap on a full size plate
Short 4D vs Standard 4D
Both versions share the same 3mm raised acrylic character and the same DVLA compliant finish. The difference is purely in plate width:
- Standard 4D – full length plate, suited to most vehicles and registrations
- Short 4D – reduced width plate, suited to shorter registrations or smaller plate recesses
