How it works

How our number plate maker works

You don’t need to know anything about plates to use it. The number plate maker only offers sizes, fonts and spacing that are legal, so you can’t design something that would fail an MOT.

  1. Type your regExactly as it appears on your V5C logbook or retention certificate. The maker adds the legal gap for you.
  2. Pick your sizesStandard, short, hex, oversized, 4×4, import, motorbike or trailer. Don’t need a front plate? Choose “Not required”.
  3. Choose a stylePrinted, 3D gel, 4D 3mm, 4D 6mm, 4D gel or retro. The price updates as you go.
  4. Add extrasA UK or green EV badge, a border, and a fixing kit if you’re fitting them yourself.
  5. Check it in 3DSpin the plate, see it on the car, and only pay once you’re happy with it.
Styles and prices

Number plate styles and prices

Prices are for a pair (front and rear) in standard sizes, with free Royal Mail Tracked 48 delivery.

Short and hex sizes are £10 extra per plate. Badges, borders and fixing kits are extras, and the number plate maker shows the full price before you check out.

Choosing a style

Which plate style should you choose?

If you just need your plates replaced, printed is the cheapest way to get road legal plates, and they look exactly like the ones the car came with.

A lot of our customers come to us straight from a failed MOT with a cracked or faded plate, and printed sorts that out for £29.99 a pair.

If you want your car to stand out, raised characters make the difference. 3D gel gives a soft, glossy dome to each letter. 4D uses laser-cut acrylic letters with sharp edges, and the 6mm version sits further off the plate for a bolder shadow.

4D gel adds a gloss layer on top of the laser-cut letters. Retro bevelled plates are our best seller: the angled edges catch the light and suit everything from a classic to a new SUV.

Not sure? Try a few styles in the number plate maker and look at them on the car before you decide. It costs nothing to play around.

Sizes

Plate sizes you can choose

Whatever size you pick, the characters stay the legal size. If a reg won’t fit a short plate legally, the maker won’t let you squeeze it in.

Our number plate maker always keeps the legal gap (top). Plates without it (bottom) fail the MOT.
Road legal

Is a plate from a number plate maker road legal?

Only if it’s made by a DVLA registered supplier and follows the British Standard. Plenty of sites will print whatever you type in. Those are show plates, and they can get you a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT fail.

PlateBoss is a DVLA registered number plate supplier, and every plate we make has:

  • the Charles Wright font and the legal character size and spacing
  • a white reflective front and a yellow reflective rear
  • raised 3D and 4D characters in solid black, with no shading or effects
  • the BS AU 145e mark plus our name and postcode along the bottom

Documents

What you need to order

The law says we have to check two things before we make a plate: who you are, and that you’re entitled to the registration. That means photo ID plus a document such as your V5C logbook, V5C/2, V750 or V778 certificate, or a lease or fleet letter.

Our valid documents page lists everything we accept and how to send it.

“Can I just make my own plate?” Usually that means someone owns a private reg and wants it on a car, which is exactly what this number plate maker is for. Making a plate at home isn’t legal: our guide on making your own number plate explains why.

FAQs

Number plate maker FAQs

Is a number plate builder the same as a number plate maker?

Yes, people use both names, and some sites call it a number plate generator. On some sites the builder only makes a picture of your plate. Ours is the real thing: what you design is what we cut, print and post to you, made by a DVLA registered supplier.

How much does it cost to make number plates?

A pair of printed plates costs £29.99 with free delivery. Raised 3D gel and 4D 3mm plates are £44.99 a pair, 4D gel starts at £59.99 and retro bevelled plates are £69.99. The number plate maker shows the full price, extras included, before you check out.

How long does it take to get my plates?

If you order by 2pm on a weekday, most orders go out the same day once we have your documents. Choose Tracked 24 at checkout if you need them sooner.

Can I put any text or a different font on my plate?

No. A road legal plate can only show your registration in the Charles Wright font with the standard spacing. You can add a UK or green EV badge and a border.

Do I need my logbook to use the number plate maker?

You can design and price your plates without it. To order, you’ll need photo ID and proof you’re entitled to the registration, such as your V5C.

Can I make plates for a car I’ve just bought?

Yes, as long as you’re the registered keeper or have the paperwork. If your new V5C hasn’t arrived yet, the V5C/2 new keeper slip is accepted.

Can I order just one plate?

Yes. Choose “Not required” for the plate you don’t need, or pick one of our single plates from £19.99.

Can I see the plate on my car before I order?

The number plate maker shows your plates on a car in 3D, so you can turn it round and see the front and rear from any angle before you pay.

What if my plates arrive damaged or wrong?

Tell us on WhatsApp with a photo and we’ll make you a new set free of charge.

Can you fit my plates for me?

Yes. Fitting at our Hounslow workshop costs £30 for plates we’ve made and takes about 20 minutes. Please book before you come.
