Are 4D Plates Legal in the UK? The 2026 Rules Explained

Short answer: are 4D plates legal? Yes, they’re legal in the UK, as long as they’re made to the current British Standard, BS AU 145e. That means solid black characters in the standard font and size, the right spacing, a reflective background, and the supplier’s name and postcode plus the BS AU 145e mark on the plate. Get those right and a 4D plate is as legal as a flat printed one.

It’s the question we’re asked most at the counter. Usually by someone who’s seen a video saying 4D plates are “banned”. They’re not. What’s illegal is a badly made 4D plate, and there are plenty of those about.

Written by the PlateBoss team, led by owner HD. We’ve been making plates since 2019 and are a DVLA-registered number plate supplier with a workshop in Hounslow, west London. Updated and checked against DVLA and GOV.UK guidance, September 2026. How we write our guides.

In this guide

A 4D plate has letters laser-cut from acrylic and fixed to the plate, so they stand up off the surface with sharp, square edges. The law doesn’t care about that. It cares about the same things it checks on every plate:

  • Solid black characters, a single shade, with no tint, colour, chrome or see-through sections.
  • The Charles Wright font, the only legal font on UK plates.
  • Standard character size: 79mm tall, 50mm wide (except 1 and I) and a 14mm stroke.
  • Standard spacing: 11mm between characters, 33mm between the two groups, and 11mm margins.
  • A reflective background, white at the front and yellow at the back, with no pattern.
  • Markings: the supplier’s name and postcode, and “BS AU 145e”. Every plate fitted since 1 September 2021 needs these.

Since the September 2021 rules came in, GOV.UK says plates “can also have 3D (raised) characters”. That’s the line that makes properly made 4D plates legal.

When are 4D plates illegal?

It’s never the 4D style that breaks the law. It’s corners being cut. These are the things we see on 4D plates that come in to be replaced:

  • Characters with a carbon-effect, chrome or two-tone finish, or a coloured edge.
  • Letters squeezed together, or the gap moved, to fit a short plate or spell a word.
  • A stylised font that looks “sportier” than Charles Wright.
  • No supplier name and postcode, or no BS AU 145e mark.
  • Non-reflective or tinted backgrounds.

Any one of those turns a 4D plate into a show plate. Our guide to show plates vs road-legal plates has seven quick ways to tell them apart. Our guide to road-legal number plate rules covers the full standard.

Has there been a ban on 4D plates?

No. There’s no ban on 4D or 3D gel plates in the UK. The rumour usually comes from the September 2021 update to the British Standard, which banned characters in more than one shade of black (the “two-tone” effect some older 4D plates used). A single-shade, solid black 4D plate made after that date is fine.

What has increased is enforcement. Police and MOT testers look at plates more closely than they used to, and ANPR cameras need to read them. So a dodgy 4D plate is more likely to be noticed now than it was a few years ago.

Are 4D gel plates legal?

Yes, the same rules apply. A 4D gel plate has laser-cut 4D letters with a clear gel dome on top for extra gloss. As long as the letters underneath are solid black and everything else meets BS AU 145e, a 4D gel plate is road legal. If the gel is tinted or changes the colour of the letters, it isn’t.

Will 4D plates pass an MOT?

A legal 4D plate will. MOT testers check that the plates are secure, legible, correctly spaced, in the right font and in good condition. They don’t fail a plate because the letters are raised. They do fail plates with the problems listed above.

If you’ve been told your 4D plates are a fail, it’s almost always the spacing, the font or missing markings. Bring them in or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you what’s wrong.

How to buy 4D plates you know are legal

  1. Buy from a DVLA-registered number plate supplier. They’re the only people who can legally make road-legal plates.
  2. Expect to show documents. A registered supplier has to see your ID and proof you’re entitled to the reg. Here’s the list of documents you’ll need. If a seller doesn’t ask, walk away.
  3. Check the plate when it arrives for the supplier’s name and postcode and the BS AU 145e mark along the bottom.
  4. Don’t ask for “tweaks”. A legal supplier won’t move the spacing or change the font, however nicely you ask.

Are 4D plates legal? FAQs

Are 4D plates legal in the UK?

Yes. 4D plates are legal as long as they meet BS AU 145e: solid black characters in the Charles Wright font, standard size and spacing, a reflective background, and the supplier’s name, postcode and BS AU 145e mark.

Are 4D plates being banned?

No. There’s no ban on 4D plates. Since September 2021, characters must be a single shade of black, which ruled out two-tone effects, but raised 4D characters are allowed.

Can I get fined for 4D plates?

Only if they’re not made to the standard. Driving with incorrectly displayed number plates can mean a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT fail.

Are 4D gel plates legal?

Yes, if the letters are solid black and the plate meets BS AU 145e. Tinted or coloured gel isn’t allowed.

Do 4D plates fail the MOT?

Legal 4D plates pass. Plates fail for the wrong font, moved spacing, coloured characters or missing markings, not for being raised.

Can I have a flag on a 4D plate?

Yes, you can have the Union flag, Cross of St George, Cross of St Andrew or Red Dragon of Wales with an approved identifier such as UK, on the left of the plate.
