How Long Do Number Plates Last? When to Replace Them
How long do number plates last? The short answer: there’s no legal expiry date. A well-made plate can last for many years, and you only have to replace it when it stops meeting the rules: when it’s cracked, faded, peeling or hard to read, or when it’s an old style that’s no longer legal. A plate in that state is a major defect at the MOT and can get you fined. Ours come with a 3-year warranty against peeling, fading and characters coming off.

Checked against DVLA leaflet INF104, GOV.UK guidance on number plates and the DVSA MOT inspection manual, October 2026. How we write our guides.

What decides how long a plate lasts
There’s no set lifespan in the rules. How long number plates last comes down to a few things:
- Materials. A proper acrylic plate with good reflective sheeting lasts far longer than the thin, cheap plates some online sellers use.
- Style. Printed, 4D and gel plates all last well when made properly. Gel plates are vinyl with a gel resin layer on top, which can deteriorate over many years.
- Fitting. Plates screwed on too tight, or drilled badly, crack more easily. Adhesive pads avoid that. See pre-drilled number plates.
- Knocks and weather. Parking bumps, stone chips and years of sun all take their toll.

What old plates look like when they come in
In all our years making plates, we’ve never had a customer come back because their plates simply didn’t last. People replace plates for other reasons.
The old plates we take off cars at the workshop are usually one of three things:
- Faded, with the yellow or the reflective finish gone dull;
- Cracked, often from a parking knock or a bad fitting;
- An older style that isn’t legal any more, like two-tone characters or a non-standard font that was sold years ago and has never been changed.

Replace them as soon as any of these is true:
- Any part of the registration is hard to read, from fading, peeling or dirt that won’t clean off.
- The plate is cracked or broken, or loose and likely to fall off.
- It doesn’t meet the current rules, for example two-tone or carbon characters, the wrong font or bad spacing.
- The markings are missing: no supplier’s name or British Standard number.
The MOT inspection manual treats a missing or insecure plate, an illegible registration, an incorrect registration and a plate that doesn’t conform to the requirements as major defects, so any of these means a fail. Our guide to number plate MOT fails goes through each one. On the road, incorrectly displayed plates can mean a fine of up to £1,000.

How to make plates last longer
- Wash them with car shampoo and a soft cloth, never abrasive pads or strong solvents. Our guide to cleaning number plates has the details.
- Use adhesive pads rather than drilling where you can.
- Check the plate is still firmly fixed after a car wash or a knock.

How long do number plates last in the UK?
There’s no legal expiry. A well-made plate can last many years. Replace it when it’s cracked, faded, peeling, hard to read or no longer meets the rules.
Do number plates expire?
No. The registration stays with the car, and the plate only needs replacing when it’s damaged or no longer legal.
Can a faded number plate fail an MOT?
Yes. An illegible registration is a major defect in the MOT, so a badly faded plate will fail.
How long do gel number plates last?
They’re durable, but the vinyl and gel can deteriorate over many years. Ours have a 3-year warranty covering peeling, fading and characters coming off.
What does your number plate warranty cover?
Characters coming off by themselves, peeling and fading, for 3 years. It doesn’t cover accident or malicious damage, or plates that have been drilled.
Should I replace old-style number plates?
Yes, if they don’t meet today’s rules. Two-tone characters, non-standard fonts and bad spacing can mean an MOT fail and a fine.
How much do replacement number plates cost?
Ours start at £29.99 for standard printed plates. See our guide to number plate prices for every style.
