Are Short Number Plates Legal? UK Rules Explained
Are short number plates legal? The short answer: yes. Short number plates are road legal in the UK as long as the plate is just wide enough to fit your registration with full-size characters, the correct spacing and the 11mm margins. What you can’t do is shrink the characters, close the gaps or cut into the margin to make a plate shorter than your registration allows.
Written by the PlateBoss team, led by owner HD. We’ve been making plates since 2019 and are a DVLA-registered number plate supplier with a workshop in Hounslow, west London. Checked against DVLA leaflet INF104, GOV.UK guidance on number plates and the Display of Registration Marks Regulations 2001, October 2026. How we write our guides.

Why short plates can be legal
UK number plate rules don’t set the overall size of the plate. DVLA leaflet INF104 sets the size of each character and the margins around them. On a car registered from September 2001, every character is 79mm tall and 50mm wide (except 1 and I), with 11mm between characters, 33mm between the two groups and at least 11mm of margin round the edge.
A standard plate is 520mm wide because that fits a full seven-character registration with room to spare. If your registration has fewer characters, the same rules can be met on a narrower plate. That’s all a short plate is.

How short can a plate be?
It depends on how many characters your registration has. Fewer characters means a shorter legal plate. We make road-legal short plates for every registration length from two characters up to seven, sized so the characters, gaps and margins all still meet the rules.
We’ve worked out the minimum widths for each registration length in our guide to number plate sizes in the UK, so check that before you order. If you’d rather not measure, send us your registration on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you the size.
Want a short plate that’s still road legal? We size every short plate to your registration, with full-size characters and proper margins.

Short plates sold online are where most of the problems happen, because the seller makes the plate fit the car rather than the registration. Watch out for:
- Shrunk characters. Car characters must be 79mm tall and 50mm wide. Smaller characters are only allowed on some motorbikes, quadricycles and certain imported vehicles.
- Closed-up spacing between characters or between the two groups. Our guide to number plate spacing shows the legal gaps.
- Missing margins, with characters running right to the edge of the plate.
- No BS AU 145e or supplier marking, often a sign of a show plate.
Any of these can mean a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT fail.
What we see at the counter
We never have to turn away a short plate request, because we make a legal size for every registration length from two to seven characters. What we do see are cars that come in with short plates bought elsewhere where the characters have been squeezed to fit, and those need replacing.
Short plates go on all kinds of cars. Most people want them because the plate recess is smaller than a standard plate, or because a short plate simply looks tidier with a short private registration.

Want a different shape as well? Hex plates follow the same rules.

Are short number plates legal in the UK?
Yes, if the plate fits your registration with full-size characters, legal spacing and at least 11mm margins. The plate size itself isn’t fixed by law.
Can I have a short plate with a seven-character registration?
Only one wide enough for seven full-size characters with legal spacing and margins. That’s close to standard length, so a very short plate won’t work.
Can the characters be made smaller to fit a short plate?
Not on a car. Car characters must be 79mm tall and 50mm wide. Smaller characters are only allowed on some motorbikes, quadricycles and certain imports.
Will a short plate fail an MOT?
Not if it meets the normal character, spacing, margin and marking rules. Squashed characters or missing margins would fail.
Are short 4D plates legal?
Yes. Short plates can have 4D raised characters as long as they’re solid black and meet BS AU 145e.
